OK, now for Part II of my Tuesday adventures – Wings of Freedom. I had heard about the Wings of Freedom tour stopping at the Groton/New London airport on the news this morning, so I figured it would be worth a stop at lunchtime. Well, I did stop, but not exactly for as long as I would have liked. I had to take care of a (nearly) flat tire first – had a broken valve stem on one tire on the car. But I did manage to squeeze a little tour in before I went back to the office.
Wings of Freedom is a tour put on by the Collings Foundation where they restore & fly World War II vintage aircraft to various airports around the country. It’s a great way to view some vintage war birds up close & personal. So I went down the street from work to the airport, paid my $12 at the gate, and walked around the aircraft for a bit. On this tour were three gorgeous aircraft – a B-17G (the Nine-O-Nine), B-24 (the Witchcraft) and a P-51 (the Betty Jane), all sitting in some beautiful lunchtime sunshine. While walking around, I also got a little bonus – a CT Army National Guard Blackhawk and another prop aircraft were heading out. OK, enough of that – here’s the photos.
