As you can probably tell, I haven’t been able to head out and shoot much of late – for a number of reasons. So instead of letting things further stagnate here, I decided to go back in time and dig out some older photos I took before I implemented the blog (first blog post is from February 2007). And for our first edition of X years ago today I present you a brief chase of the New England Central Railroad between Palmer, Mass. and Willington, Conn – with a little bit of Providence & Worcester, CSX and Mass. Central thrown into the mix for good measure – as I photographed it on October 24, 2005.
First off, I want to wish everyone a happy and healthy new year. Hopefully everyone had a safe and joyous Christmas and holiday season. And to kick off the new year, I figured I’d pull together a recap of my 2013 photographic ramblings along the rails of the northeast – well, one favorite from each month, that is. Last year wasn’t exactly a stellar year for shooting, quantitatively speaking – only managing to get out a few times a month over the entire year, but I did get some decent stuff in those limited times trackside – including shots of CSX, Norfolk Southern, Providence & Worcester, PanAm Railways and the Valley Railroad. I went through and picked out my favorite shot from each month of the year, and I figured I’d talk a bit about each one here. So grab your favorite beverage, sit back and enjoy what you’re reading and seeing!
And we continue on with the 2012 photo recap, with this post moving onto the second quarter of 2012. During this three month span the subjects ranged from the usual railroad photos, to submarines, a new bridge, a locomotive shop and a two-day photo charter. So does that mean I’ll pick more photos? Read on and find out…
I had to make another trip down to NJ last week for work – of course the cameras came along. Granted, it was a shorter trip – only three days as opposed to the usual full week, so time to get out and shoot was limited, but I did manage to shoot a little. And I did get some new material – namely the East Penn Railroad, along with some of the usual suspects – CSX, New Jersey Transit and Norfolk Southern. At least it wasn’t snowing… Read on for the full story and photos.
Busy times lately – both at work and at home. But I figured it was time for a quick blog post to stir things up a bit and let you all know where things are. First off, you’ll see my work – both photos and writing – in a couple magazines’ March 2012 issues, one of which is the first time I’ve had my writing published in it. Next, I’ve been scanning a few older slides of late, and posted a few for you all to enjoy. And lastly, you’ll be able to see one of my prints at the Amherst Railway Society’s Railroad Hobby Show at the Big E in West Springfield, MA this weekend! Read on for all of the details.
Once again I had to make a work trip to New Jersey the week of September 12th, and I did manage to get a little shooting in while I was there – both day and night (yes, the Lumedynes came along for the ride as well). The first day, before checking into the hotel, I made my way down to Bound Brook to do a little shooting there – it was a nice evening, and hopefully there would be a couple trains.
And the final installment from my June trip to Joysey. This is another morning/evening look that happened on June 16th, but was at two of what I consider to be the “low hanging fruit” locations – Manville and Bound Brook, NJ. But since it was a Thursday, there was a group of other railfans at Bound Brook in the evening, which made for some great conversation to pass the time between trains. Not that there was much time between trains. And there was a rare three-way meet on NJT at the station as well.
Last month I had to make another trek to the Garden State for work, and unlike the past couple trips, I actually got to get out and shoot a bit. Not as much as usual, but I did manage to make it trackside a few days. Even made it over into Pennsylvania one evening for a little Keystone State fun. This is Part 1 of 3 covering two evening visits to Bound Brook.
Last month I had to make a trip down to New Jersey for work again. And as I mentioned in my last post about an evening in Rensselaer, I’ve finally gotten around to posting the shots. So instead of doing each day as a single post, I’m going to lump them all together into one big monolithic post. Well, not too big – it ended up at 40 shots in all, taken both in daylight and by the light of the Lumedyne. Read on for the overview and bunch of photos.
Oops, I missed a bunch of photos from January in my one big post from a little while back. On January 22, Bob LaMay and I made our annual trip up to the Mystic Valley Railway Society’s calendar judging luncheon. And as usual, we did a little railfanning along the way. On the way up we shot the Grafton & Upton, CSX, MBTA and CSX, and on the way home we caught one more MBTA train. And in between we saw some pretty good rail photos as candidates for the 2012 MVRS calendar, and had a very tasty lunch.
