First off, I want to wish everyone a happy and healthy new year. Hopefully everyone had a safe and joyous Christmas and holiday season. And to kick off the new year, I figured I’d pull together a recap of my 2013 photographic ramblings along the rails of the northeast – well, one favorite from each month, that is. Last year wasn’t exactly a stellar year for shooting, quantitatively speaking – only managing to get out a few times a month over the entire year, but I did get some decent stuff in those limited times trackside – including shots of CSX, Norfolk Southern, Providence & Worcester, PanAm Railways and the Valley Railroad. I went through and picked out my favorite shot from each month of the year, and I figured I’d talk a bit about each one here. So grab your favorite beverage, sit back and enjoy what you’re reading and seeing!
The last couple weeks of September brought me back to northern New Jersey for work again, and of course I managed to get out and shoot a bit. I visited some of my usual haunts – both in daylight and under cover of darkness, as well as added a couple of others spots – including a late-night stop on the New York, Susquehanna & Western. This was also a trip where I aimed to experiment a bit more with my nighttime flash setups – I did mix that experimentation in with some of the more run-of-the-mill stuff. Read on to check it all out…well, at least the first week in this post…
And we continue on with the 2012 photo recap, with this post moving onto the second quarter of 2012. During this three month span the subjects ranged from the usual railroad photos, to submarines, a new bridge, a locomotive shop and a two-day photo charter. So does that mean I’ll pick more photos? Read on and find out…
I had to make another trip down to NJ last week for work – of course the cameras came along. Granted, it was a shorter trip – only three days as opposed to the usual full week, so time to get out and shoot was limited, but I did manage to shoot a little. And I did get some new material – namely the East Penn Railroad, along with some of the usual suspects – CSX, New Jersey Transit and Norfolk Southern. At least it wasn’t snowing… Read on for the full story and photos.
On the second day of my New Jersey work trip, I got out a couple times to shoot – first at sunrise, and then after sunset. The shots at sunrise were in the Garden State, and the ones in the dark were 60 some odd miles to the west in the Keystone State – both were of Norfolk Southern trains plying the rails of the Lehigh and Reading Lines.
Once again I had to make a work trip to New Jersey the week of September 12th, and I did manage to get a little shooting in while I was there – both day and night (yes, the Lumedynes came along for the ride as well). The first day, before checking into the hotel, I made my way down to Bound Brook to do a little shooting there – it was a nice evening, and hopefully there would be a couple trains.
And the final installment from my June trip to Joysey. This is another morning/evening look that happened on June 16th, but was at two of what I consider to be the “low hanging fruit” locations – Manville and Bound Brook, NJ. But since it was a Thursday, there was a group of other railfans at Bound Brook in the evening, which made for some great conversation to pass the time between trains. Not that there was much time between trains. And there was a rare three-way meet on NJT at the station as well.
And on to part 2 of three of my last business trip to New Jersey. For this one, the shots were taken on one day – some in the morning before work, and some in the evening after work. And for this one, I covered both the Garden and Keystone States, getting Norfolk Southern action in both.
Last month I had to make another trek to the Garden State for work, and unlike the past couple trips, I actually got to get out and shoot a bit. Not as much as usual, but I did manage to make it trackside a few days. Even made it over into Pennsylvania one evening for a little Keystone State fun. This is Part 1 of 3 covering two evening visits to Bound Brook.
Last month I had to make a trip down to New Jersey for work again. And as I mentioned in my last post about an evening in Rensselaer, I’ve finally gotten around to posting the shots. So instead of doing each day as a single post, I’m going to lump them all together into one big monolithic post. Well, not too big – it ended up at 40 shots in all, taken both in daylight and by the light of the Lumedyne. Read on for the overview and bunch of photos.
