Valley Railroad

Hanging with the Track Gang 2   Recently updated !

There’s lots to do around a tourist railroad to keep things rolling smoothly, both in a mechanical and aesthetic sense.  From carpentry, welding, or painting to brush clearing and trackwork – and all of that takes human effort to accomplish.  The Valley Railroad, based in Essex, Connecticut is no different.  But they have one asset that […]

Summertime inside a teakettle 3

Weather forecasts were calling for high temperatures approaching the 90s, coupled with fairly high humidity for Saturday July 30, 2016 – a pretty normal occurrence for mid-summer in southern New England.  Instead of seeking out the comfort of an air conditioned space, I headed out to do a little shooting – in an even warmer environment, the cab […]

2015 – A year that couldn’t end fast enough

Two Thousand and Fifteen started out like most any other year for me – a busy schedule for the family/kids, a chock-full year at work, and lots of stuff in the ‘photo idea’ bin, coupled with some time to possibly take care of at least a few of those goals.  Then February hit, and my world […]

Valley Railroad Mikado No. 3025 leads a North Pole Express train over the Old Deep River Road crossing in Centerbrook, Connecticut. This photo was inspired by two photos - done 30 and 60 years prior. The latter being the Pincus/Hart Jr. work "Night Ride 1985" taken at the same crossing, and Link's "Luray Crossing, Virginia 1955" Lighting was three Alien Bee B800s and a Lumedyne 200 w/s

Inspiration and Execution 1

As artists, we undeniably use other people’s work to stoke the creative fires inside our own imaginations.  Whether it’s re-making a photo that has been done before, taking pieces from multiple works and mashing them together into something of your own or just using it as motivation to move in a different direction, it’s all […]

2015 TRAINS Photo Contest

Imagine getting some great news that you’d love to share with everyone you know (and even more), but you can’t for a couple of months.  Well, that happened to me recently – and I’ll tell you, it’s been pretty hard keeping my yap shut.  A couple of months ago, I got a call at home […]

"Continuing to push snow North"

Moving Snow

With the recent significant snowfalls that have blanketed the Nutmeg State in the early parts of 2015, railroads have had to run extra trains to clear their lines of snow.  Normally tourist lines would not need to do this since they’re typically spring/summer/fall operations.  But the Valley Railroad in Essex, Connecticut is a bit different […]

As the winter months approach, we start thinking about the coming New Year.  Along with the holiday celebrations, it’s time to get a new calendar to hang on the wall!  After a few years’ hiatus, there’s a 2015 calendar available with a year’s worth of my photographs – but this is something that I only […]

The Making of a Gallery Exhibit – the prep work 1

For this blog post, how about a quick peek into some of the work I’ve been doing to prepare for my upcoming gallery exhibit in Essex, Connecticut?  I figured something different might be kind of refreshing here – instead of the usual photos of what comes out of my camera, we’d take a look behind the […]
