Inspiration and Execution

Valley Railroad Mikado No. 3025 leads a North Pole Express train over the Old Deep River Road crossing in Centerbrook, Connecticut. This photo was inspired by two photos - done 30 and 60 years prior. The latter being the Pincus/Hart Jr. work "Night Ride 1985" taken at the same crossing, and Link's "Luray Crossing, Virginia 1955" Lighting was three Alien Bee B800s and a Lumedyne 200 w/s

As artists, we undeniably use other people’s work to stoke the creative fires inside our own imaginations.  Whether it’s re-making a photo that has been done before, taking pieces from multiple works and mashing them together into something of your own or just using it as motivation to move in a different direction, it’s all […]

2015 TRAINS Photo Contest

Imagine getting some great news that you’d love to share with everyone you know (and even more), but you can’t for a couple of months.  Well, that happened to me recently – and I’ll tell you, it’s been pretty hard keeping my yap shut.  A couple of months ago, I got a call at home […]

Moving Snow

"Continuing to push snow North"

With the recent significant snowfalls that have blanketed the Nutmeg State in the early parts of 2015, railroads have had to run extra trains to clear their lines of snow.  Normally tourist lines would not need to do this since they’re typically spring/summer/fall operations.  But the Valley Railroad in Essex, Connecticut is a bit different […]

2015 Calendar On Sale!

As the winter months approach, we start thinking about the coming New Year.  Along with the holiday celebrations, it’s time to get a new calendar to hang on the wall!  After a few years’ hiatus, there’s a 2015 calendar available with a year’s worth of my photographs – but this is something that I only […]

Dinner Train Cab Ride

To start off the month of June, I rode along with the Valley Railroad‘s Essex Clipper Dinner Train.  But not as a passenger enjoying the on-board dinner with my wife, as we usually do every summer.  Nope, instead I rode up in the head end with the engineer for the 2 1/2 hour ride from […]

A Dozen Miles in a Decade – Art Gallery Exhibit

Now that my first solo gallery exhibit, A Dozen Miles in a Decade, has opened at the Oliver Jensen Gallery at the Essex Steam Train in Essex, Connecticut, I can give you all some more details – including how to purchase prints online!

The Making of a Gallery Exhibit – the prep work

For this blog post, how about a quick peek into some of the work I’ve been doing to prepare for my upcoming gallery exhibit in Essex, Connecticut?  I figured something different might be kind of refreshing here – instead of the usual photos of what comes out of my camera, we’d take a look behind the […]

Thoughts on 10 Years of Nights

As I usually do, I kick many ideas around in my head – from ideas about potential photos, to reassessing the photos I’ve taken thus far.  Lately – well, over the past couple of years, at least – I’ve been thinking about my night shots quite a bit.  What do I like?  What don’t I […]

A Dozen Miles in a Decade – a Gallery Exhibit

For the past 8 or so years I’ve been exhibiting my photos in various art galleries around eastern Connecticut – whether as a part of a photo club group exhibit, supporting a special event at the gallery or splitting the bill with another photographer.  The summer and fall of 2014 will bring a change in […]

My Top 12 of ’13

Into the Darkness

First off, I want to wish everyone a happy and healthy new year.  Hopefully everyone had a safe and joyous Christmas and holiday season.  And to kick off the new year, I figured I’d pull together a recap of my 2013 photographic ramblings along the rails of the northeast – well, one favorite from each […]
