The Single Digit Stroll

The start of January 2013 brought some cold temperatures to Connecticut, and it also brought some vacation time to me.  On the third day of the new year – a day that started out with the mercury diving to about 5°F – I decided to head out for some train shooting.  And me being the glutton for punishment, I figured my first shot should involve a good 10 minute walk along the Thames River.  What the hell, I was on vacation…

Digging back into May – NECR 608, ethanol and bruises

Well, here’s another batch of photos I never posted.  Actually, it was for good reason – it involves a bit of personal injury (both to my body and ego), flying cameras, as well as the temporary loss of my glasses.  But the important thing is this – despite risking life & limb (and cameras), I got the shots!  For those of you who attended my presentation for the Massachusetts Bay Railroad Enthusiasts’ Summer Picnic in Palmer back in July, you already know the story behind these photos.  For the rest of you who weren’t able to join us, read on – you’ll get the skinny… Continue Reading →

PW NR2 and NECR (or is it FEC?) 608 with empty cans and a sub

August 27th – a Friday – graced us with some beautiful weather – and a half day at work for me.  That ended up translating into two trains and a submarine that crossed in front of my lens.  The odd thing was the power used on one of the trains – they were quite a distance from their home turf.  Still made for an interesting train to shoot.

A week’s worth – Amtrak, NECR, PW, FEC and ethanol

Continuing on the backlog here – but instead of what I would normally do and make one post for each “outing,” instead I’m putting together one massive post with a week’s full of shots in it.  Basically taking care of pretty much the entire backlog in one fell swoop.  In this catch-all post, you’ll see Amtrak, NECR (with NECR and FEC power) and the P&W for railroads, and the usual passenger, freight and a couple ethanol moves thrown in for good measure (both empty and loaded).  Yep, there’s a lot of stuff here to check out…

Fog, freight and empty moonshine jugs

Thursday the third of June started out with some pretty thick fog here in southeastern Connecticut.  And in that fog, a few trains rain – one regular job, and two extras.  As luck would have it, I managed to lens each of those – well, in one form or another.

All But Tuesday – P&W and NECR from last week

NECR NERWNEOK, a bit of catching up to do tonight.  I actually managed to shoot a bit last week, and got stuff from every day except Tuesday.  Not bad overall.  And it consisted of Providence & Worcester NR-2 and New England Central NERWNE (formerly known as 608) at a few locations along the Thames River.  The foliage, like usual down in southeastern Connecticut, is a bit behind the rest of the state, so it’s spotty.  Maybe next week, if all the wind & rain we had didn’t rip the leaves off of the trees, we’ll see some nice color along the river.
